Philip Collins, dit Phil Collins, est un auteur-compositeur-interprète, acteur et producteur musical britannique, né le 30 janvier 1951 à Chiswick dans le borough londonien de Hounslow (Angleterre). Connu en tant que batteur et chanteur du groupe Genesis, il a également une prolifique carrière solo; il mène ces deux carrières en parallèle de 1981 à 1996. C'est aussi un musicien accompli qui joue de plusieurs instruments, la batterie et les percussions étant ses instruments de base. Mais il joue aussi des claviers, de la guitare, de la basse, etc. Bercé par les rythmes soul et pop des années Motown et par les Beatles, Phil Collins commence très jeune une carrière professionnelle de batteur dans la musique. Il commence sa carrière en 1968 en tant que batteur du groupe Freehold avec lequel il produit un single Lying, Crying, Dying/The Sandman, par la suite il forme un autre groupe d'abord nommé Hickory qu'il forme avec son ami Ronnie Caryl, Brian Chatton et Gordon Smith. Ils changeront de nom pour Flaming Youth et publient un album intitulé Ark 2. Malgré quelques apparitions télé et des critiques favorables, le groupe se sépare en 1970. Peu de temps après, Phil devient membre de Genesis à partir de 1970, groupe de rock progressif qui a été fondé en 1967. À l'origine uniquement batteur et choriste du groupe, c'est à la suite du départ du chanteur Peter Gabriel en 1975 que Phil Collins devient un peu par défaut, en 1976, la voix de Genesis. Le groupe s'adjoint alors un deuxième batteur pour les tournées (Bill Bruford en 1976, Chester Thompson à partir de 1977, puis son propre fils Nicholas Collins à partir de 2020), et les duos de batterie avec Collins deviennent des temps forts de leurs concerts: Phil étant gaucher et l'autre batteur droitier, les deux semblent jouer en miroir. À partir de succès tels que Follow You Follow Me en 1978, Genesis connaît sa plus grande période de réussite commerciale, qui dure jusqu'au début des années 1990. Encensé par le triomphe de sa carrière solo, il se détache de son poste au sein du groupe en 1996. Genesis se reforme en 2007 pour une grande tournée mondiale couronnée de succès. Certaines de ses chansons rencontrent un très grand succès, telles que Against All Odds, Another Day in Paradise, One More Night, Easy Lover, Something Happened on the Way to Heaven, Do You Remember, Two Hearts, Take Me Home, In the Air Tonight, Sussudio. Phil est considéré comme l'un des plus grands batteurs de rock progressif de sa génération: il s'est d'ailleurs toujours considéré comme un batteur avant d'être un chanteur. Et il est aussi un multi-instrumentiste, jouant des percussions, du piano et autres claviers, de la guitare et de la basse, comme sur son album Both Sides, sorti en 1993, qu'il a entièrement écrit et enregistré seul, sans aucun autre musicien. Il reçoit sept Grammy Awards, un Oscar et deux Golden Globes. Il a son étoile sur le Hollywood Hall of Fame. Il devient ainsi l'un des batteurs les plus prolifiques de sa génération. ...
