Biographie
Fidel Castro, né le 13 août 1926 à Birán (dans la province de Holguín) et mort le 25 novembre 2016 à La Havane, est un révolutionnaire et homme d'État cubain. Il dirige la République de Cuba, pendant 49 ans, comme Premier ministre de 1959 à 1976 et ensuite comme président du Conseil d'État et président du Conseil des ministres de 1976 à 2008. C’est son frère Raúl Castro qui lui succède. Il est un des principaux dirigeants de la Révolution cubaine qui renversa le régime dictatorial de Fulgencio Batista. Fidel Castro, Raúl Castro, et Ernesto Guevara (dit « le Che ») donnent à la révolution, officiellement nationaliste au départ, une orientation marxiste-léniniste au début des années 1960, au moment de son affrontement avec les administrations américaines de l'époque. Le pays se rapproche alors de l'URSS. À la suite de la révolution, le régime cubain instaure progressivement une république socialiste à parti unique. Fidel Castro est également député de Santiago à partir de 1976 et premier secrétaire du Parti communiste de Cuba à partir de sa refondation en 1965. Considéré assez différemment à travers le monde, il est perçu par certains mouvements socialistes et communistes comme une icône alors que d'autres le voient comme un homme ayant instauré un régime autoritaire. Il est aujourd'hui généralement considéré comme un dictateur par les historiens occidentaux et les pays démocratiques.
