Biographie
Elvis Aaron Presley est né le 8 janvier 1935 à Tupelo, dans l'État du Mississippi, dans une petite maison de type shotgun house construite par son père, Vernon Elvis Presley (1916-1979), en prévision de sa naissance1. Sa mère, Gladys Love Smith (1912-1958), accouche 35 minutes auparavant d'un enfant mort-né, Jesse Garon Presley, frère jumeau d'Elvis, qui est inhumé dans une tombe anonyme au cimetière de Priceville, à Tupelo2. Les parents d'Elvis Presley appartiennent à une Assemblée de Dieu, une Église pentecôtiste, qui constitue sa première influence musicale. Sa mère, dont il est particulièrement proche, est considérée comme le membre dominant de la famille par leurs proches, tandis que son père enchaîne les petits boulots sans faire preuve d'une grande ambition3,4. Les Presley ne sont pas riches et doivent souvent s'appuyer sur leurs voisins ou les aides de l'État pour subvenir à leurs besoins5. À l'école d'East Tupelo Consolidated, où il entre en septembre 1941, Presley est considéré comme un élève moyen par le corps enseignant6. Il se produit pour la première fois sur scène le 3 octobre 1945 lors d'un concours de chant au Mississippi-Alabama Fair and Dairy Show. Habillé en cowboy, il interprète la chanson de country Old Shep et se classe cinquième7. Quelques mois plus tard, il reçoit sa première guitare en cadeau d'anniversaire89. Ses premières leçons lui sont données par deux de ses oncles, ainsi que par le nouveau pasteur de l'église de la famille10. Presley change d'école en septembre 1946 et entre à Milam. L'année suivante, il commence à prendre sa guitare avec lui tous les jours pour jouer de la musique et chanter à l'heure du déjeuner. Sa famille vit alors dans un quartier à dominante afroaméricaine, et il est considéré comme un garçon solitaire qui joue de la musique de péquenauds11. Il écoute religieusement l'émission de radio de Mississippi Slim et parvient à le rencontrer par l'intermédiaire d'un de ses camarades de classe, qui n'est autre que le frère de Slim. Ce dernier apprend à Presley à jouer des accords à la guitare12 et le fait passer dans son émission lorsqu'il a 12 ans13.
