Biographie
John Towner Williams est un compositeur, chef d'orchestre et pianiste américain, né le 8 février 1932 à New York. Il est principalement reconnu pour ses musiques de films, ayant largement contribué au renouveau des bandes originales symphoniques. Son œuvre la plus célèbre demeure la musique de la saga Star Wars. Collaborateur attitré de Steven Spielberg et George Lucas, John Williams a composé, au cours d'une carrière s'étendant sur près de soixante ans, de nombreuses musiques emblématiques de l'histoire d'Hollywood. Parmi celles-ci, on compte les bandes originales de "Les Dents de la mer", "Maman, j'ai raté l'avion", "E.T. l'extra-terrestre", "Indiana Jones", "Jurassic Park", "Superman", "La Liste de Schindler", et les trois premiers films de la saga "Harry Potter". Il a également composé la musique pour quatre Olympiades, "NBC Nightly News", la cérémonie d'investiture du président Barack Obama, et de nombreuses séries télévisées. Williams a remporté cinq Oscars de la meilleure musique de film, ainsi que 4 Golden Globes, 7 BAFTA Awards et 21 Grammy Awards. Avec 54 nominations aux Oscars, il est le compositeur de musiques de films le plus nommé de l'histoire, seulement surpassé par Walt Disney avec 59 nominations. John Williams a été intronisé au Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame en 2000 et a reçu les Kennedy Center Honors en 2004. En dehors du cinéma, Williams a composé de nombreuses œuvres de musique classique pour de grands orchestres. Par exemple, il a écrit un Concerto pour cor pour Dale Clevenger et l'Orchestre symphonique de Chicago, un Concerto pour violoncelle pour Yo-Yo Ma et l'Orchestre symphonique de Boston, et un Concerto pour basson pour les 150 ans de l'Orchestre philharmonique de New York. Il a également été le principal chef de l'Orchestre Boston Pops de 1980 à 1993. Grâce à son talent pour la composition et l'orchestration, sa longévité, ainsi que la popularité et l'influence de ses œuvres, John Williams est considéré par de nombreux spécialistes du cinéma et de la musique comme le plus grand compositeur de musiques de films de tous les temps.
