Richard Linklater, né le 30 juillet 1960 à Houston, au Texas, est un réalisateur, scénariste et producteur américain. Bien que beaucoup de ses films soient populaires et les productions - bien rémunérées, Llinklater réside toujours à Austin, Texas. Il refuse de travailler ou vivre à l’Hollywood pendant une longue période de temps. Richard Linklater appartient à une nouvelle génération de cinéastes indépendants américains, capable d'alterner le cinéma expérimental (Slacker, Waking Life) et les productions "grand public" (Before Sunrise, Rock Academy), à l'image de Steven Soderbergh, chef de file du mouvement. L'action de ses films se déroule souvent sur une seule journée. Ses films se situent souvent au Texas. Il fait fréquemment appel à l'acteur Ethan Hawke pour participer à ses films.
