Dolly Rebecca Parton, née le 19 janvier 1946 à Sevierville (Tennessee), est une chanteuse country et pop, auteure-compositrice-interprète, musicienne multi-instrumentiste, actrice, scénariste, philanthrope, femme d'affaires et productrice américaine. Après plus d'un demi-siècle de carrière ininterrompue, elle est devenue, entre autres, la reine de la musique country («Queen of Country Music»). Elle a vendu plus de 100 millions d'albums dans le monde. Elle a atteint trois fois la première marche du classement POP aux États-Unis et 24 fois en musique country. Dolly Parton naît le 19 janvier 1946 dans une famille pauvre du Tennessee, fille de Robert Lee, un fermier, et d'Avie Lee Owens. Pendant de nombreuses années, son père cultive le tabac, mais pour des raisons économiques, il doit déménager à Détroit pour travailler dans l'industrie automobile. La chanteuse grandit au sein d'une fratrie de douze enfants dans une cabane en bois où ils dorment à cinq enfants dans le même lit. Dolly Parton commence très jeune sa carrière, vers l'âge de 11 ans. Elle bénéficie de l'aide de son oncle Bill qui travaille alors à la radio locale. C'est avec son aide qu'elle interprète sa première chanson Puppy Love à la radio. Après ses 18 ans, elle déménage à Nashville, capitale de la musique country. Elle y fait la rencontre de Porter Wagoner, chanteur de country et animateur de l'une des plus grandes émissions musicales de l'époque, il engage Dolly Parton vers la fin des années 1960 en tant que chanteuse. Elle prend rapidement une place de plus en plus centrale dans l'émission et a même le droit d'animer l'émission à plusieurs reprises. Elle enregistre plusieurs albums avec Porter Wagoner, dont certains morceaux à succès. Mais ayant de plus grandes ambitions, elle écrit et chante plusieurs chansons de son côté, sans grande reconnaissance au départ. Peu sûre de son physique, elle prend l'habitude de mettre des perruques de plus en plus extravagantes, se trouvant trop petite elle se juche sur de hauts talons. Plus tard elle fait augmenter sa poitrine, s'impose une discipline de fer pour garder la taille fine. Elle se crée ainsi une silhouette caractéristique, vêtue de façon toujours plus clinquante, dont elle plaisante volontiers avec autodérision. En 1966, elle épouse un entrepreneur, Carl Dean, qui restera loin des projecteurs braqués sur sa femme. Ils n'ont pas eu d'enfant. Son premier grand succès sur la scène country vient de sa reprise de Mule skinner blues, suivi par Dumb blonde, issu de son premier album Hello I'm Dolly. En 1973, elle quitte le Porter Wagoner Show pour se concentrer sur sa carrière, elle dédie une chanson à Porter Wagoner pour lui dire à quel point elle l'aime et pour le remercier, ce sera I Will Always Love You, chanson mondialement connue et reprise par Whitney Houston. Elle cultive toujours un profond attachement à ses racines du Tennessee, entre souvenirs d'enfance et autres influences rurales, mais elle pousse loin la contradiction en développant une image «glamour», tantôt «trash», tantôt volontairement «kitsch», qui lui permet d'avoir une influence qui va bien au-delà de la musique country ou gospel. ...
